Pepper Heart

Shake me down
From your salt and pepper
Heart
Where the ocean runs to meet the sand
And where roots run to meet the dark

I cannot hold onto a hand
That is primarily nitrogen
When it is also carbon and oxygen
And yet does not deserve to
Stand
On its own

As a representation of the hearth’s dying embers
And the moon’s fading glory
I stand in dawn’s doorway
And wait for her trumpet to sound

I fall onto a saucer
And am consumed by a sphinx.
